Railroad Heavy and Light Equipment Operator and CDL Driver

General Summary/Description:

Local railroad construction company seeking motivated individual to join our growing team and expanding business.  Candidate must have a valid driver’s license and acceptable motor vehicle record (MVR).  Be willing to obtain their CDL-B license, CDL-A license a plus.  Candidate must have reliable transportation, must be able to get to shop daily.  Periodic overnight travel may be required.  Travel expenses and transportation provided to job sites and out-of-town work.  The work week is four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday.  Plenty of opportunity for overtime.  All work is considered safety sensitive and is highly regulated by the Federal Railroad Association (FRA) and Department of Transportation (DOT).  Supervision received may vary from close to moderate depending on level of experience.

Typical work includes loading and unloading various types of materials and tools in/off trucks at the shop or at work sites.  Work includes operating heavy duty construction equipment including the use of shovels, picks, compressors, heavy duty pneumatic tools, grinders, and various tools associated with railroad work.  Work may involve redirecting traffic, cleaning up debris, place barricades and other duties/work associated with railroad construction, maintenance, and repair.  Candidate will assist skilled workers during construction, maintenance, and repair projects.  Responsibilities include the safe operation of company equipment.  Candidates will be required to abide by all FRA safety-sensitive work and company health and safety policies.

Qualifications:

  • 21 years of age
  • Valid driver’s license (must provide a MVR)
  • Must meet preemployment DOT physical requirements (DOT card).
  • Must be able to pass a DOT drug and alcohol test.
  • Will be subject to provide past drug tests and/or any attendance of substance abuse programs.
  • Must submit to a CORI/SORI, background check.
  • Must be physically capable of lifting greater than 50 pounds for extended periods of time during the day.
  • Must be comfortable using a wide range of equipment and tools, strong mechanical and technical skills a plus.
  • CDL A and/or B with the ability to move heavy duty equipment (preferred).
  • CDL-A with a minimum of 1 year of commercial driving a plus

Responsibilities:

  • Comply with (and actively promote) all safety policies and procedures including reporting all accidents, incidents and near misses to ensure adherence to our Number One Core Value – Safety First in everything we do.
  • Complete equipment condition reports, as well as a daily checklist of work to be done on your equipment and provide to the project superintendent daily.
  • Cleaning the machines regularly.  This includes sweeping the cabs and removing trash daily, cleaning the interior weekly, and lubricating doors and windows bi-weekly.
  • Understand and comply with all Company safety policies and procedures.  Know where all utilities within the work zone are located.  Be responsible for your own safety as well as those working in the area.
  • Inform your superintendent or foreman daily of your equipment fuel status so the fuel truck can be scheduled if needed for the next morning.
  • Make a note on your equipment report and let your superintendent know if you need any supplies, i.e.: grease, oil, rags, cleaning supplies, or if the machine needs to be steam cleaned/pressure washed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the use of tools, equipment and materials commonly used in railroad construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Ability to demonstrate safe operation of construction equipment (excavator, wheel loader, forklift, grapple truck boom operation)
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual laboring tasks for extended periods, potentially under adverse weather conditions.

Education:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Hydraulic Hoisting license which includes plows, forklifts, excavators, wheel loaders (preferred).
  • Certificate of tractor trailer training (preferred).

Railroad Equipment Yard Mechanic and CDL Driver

Typical work includes but is not limited to repairing, transporting, loading, and unloading various types of equipment, materials, and tools in/off trucks at the shop or at work sites.  This position requires strong Diesel repair and maintenance, Hydraulic, and Low-Voltage Electrical Skill. The qualified candidate must like to work outdoors.  Work includes operating heavy duty construction equipment including the periodic use of shovels, picks, compressors, heavy duty pneumatic tools, grinders, and various tools associated with railroad work.  Work may involve other duties/work associated with railroad construction, maintenance, and repair.  Candidate may assist skilled workers during construction, maintenance, and repair projects.  Responsibilities include the safe operation of company equipment.  Candidates will be required to abide by all FRA safety-sensitive work and company health and safety policies.

  • Communicate and work with Vice President on all responsibilities.

  • Ensure the shop is adequately supplied with maintenance supplies such as grease, oil, various common filters, rags, cleaning supplies.
  • Clean machines as necessary such as steam cleaning/pressure washing.
  • Other duties as assigned. (May require periodic field work and travel)

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Knowledge of the use of tools, equipment and materials commonly used in railroad construction, maintenance, and repair work.
  • Knowledge (demonstrated) of diesel, gas, and small engine repair.
  • Knowledge of hydraulic repair. (hoses, pumps, and motors)
  • Must be mechanically inclined, possess the ability to do modifications to equipment.
  • Knowledge of various metals and ability to weld.
  • Ability to demonstrate safe operation of construction equipment (excavator, wheel loader, forklift, grapple truck boom operation)
  • Ability to understand and follow oral instructions.

Our staff must have reliable transportation, be able to get to the shop daily and be flexible enough for periodic overnight travel. NRS always pays travel expenses and transportation generally provided to job sites and out-of-town work. Our work week is four 10-hour days, Monday through Thursday with plenty of opportunity for overtime. All work is considered safety sensitive and is highly regulated by the Federal Railroad Association (FRA) and Department of Transportation (DOT). Our workforce must be able to pass 49 CFR, part 219 Drug and Alcohol testing.
